INSPIRATION

The inspiration for the book came partially from childhood. I grew up in the 1960’s in a medium-sized seaside town in the South of England, which had an airport not far from my home. My formative years were spent watching old piston-engine aircraft taking off and landing, carrying passengers, freight and the new, burgeoning Car Ferry traffic. This inspired a lifelong interest in aviation, and it took a few decades to realize my own ambition to fly for a living. Visits to the airport with my father or school buddies on our bikes were taken almost daily, and it was fascinating to watch the development of the airport and the aircraft. Peter and his family are entirely fictitious, but are loosely based on families of the time, and the book harks back to those simpler, carefree times.
